Locations to fish in the region:
Wagga region:
Murrumbidgee River: is a major river in the Murray Darling System. This river starts up in the foot hills of the Snowy Mountains and travels 900kms across NSW and ACT where it runs into the Murray River. The Murrumbidgee has some excellent tributaries and dams that hold many fish. The Murrumbidgee has some of the best freshwater fishing in Australia, especially for the mighty Murray Cod. The river has many excellent structures that hold some of Australia's best Murray Cod fishing.
Lake Albert: is situated in the suburb of Lake Albert in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia. Covering 125ha it was built in the 1890's on what was known as Swampy Plains. Before the drought that hit in 2005 the Lake use to be one of the best fishing spots in the region. There use to be some of the biggest Murray Cod that lived in the Lake. Some of these fished weight up to 80lbs and over a metre long. Once you hook onto a fish at this size you know you're onto a fish of a life time. There are no structures left in the Lake at all now because of the removal of the willows that surrounded the lake. Which means there must be another spot that these big Cod use to hand out and there was. They use to sit out in the middle of the Lake and the way to catch them was to sit out there anchored up with huge un-weighted bardi grubs. This technique would produce these huge Cod. Now that the drought has wiped out most of the monsters these Cod and in very low. They aren't in numbers so they aren't as easy to catch. Even though these fish are hard to catch in the Lake there is something else to catch there.
If you want to go out somewhere in the region to catch any type of fish that puts up a good fight you should go to the Lake. The Lake is packed full of massive European Carp that are easy to hook onto but once hooked they give you a run for your money. Since April 2006 we have caught over 575 carp out of Lake Albert with the biggest being 80cm, 6kg (12lbs). When you hook into a fish this size on light tackle (which we use) it gives an excellent battle and pushes you to your limits. People think of the carp as not being sport fish, obviously they have never hook one in their life. So if you want to practise your fishing and build your skills up I would defiantly think about giving Lake Albert a shot. Go to Fishing Images to see the Carp that we caught in one day at Lake Albert. For more info on the European Carp go to Fish in the region.
Flowerdale Lagoon: is an under fished lagoon that is loaded with massive hard fighting carp up to 6kg (12lbs). Flowerdale is only a small lagoon situated in the suburb of Flowerdale. This small lagoon can be hard to find but once found you will have a lot of fun fishing. The water's edge of Flowerdale Lagoon can be hard to access but once you find and opening from the reeds and snags along the bank you should be landing some of the giants that live in its depths. If you can find an opening from the reeds and cast out under a submerged snag you will be in even better chance of finding a monster.

Other waterways around the area:
Old Man Creek: The Old Man Creek is a great little creek for both bait fishing and lure casting, although snags are in great abundance in this little waterway. The Old Man Creek separates from the Murrumbidgee River near Collingullie upstream of Kohlhagen's TSR (Travelling Stock Route) and joins back with the Murrumbidgee 70km downstream at The Dairy Reserve. There are many good reserves to fish along this 70km with some of the better ones being Central Island Road Reserve, Berry Jerry State Forest and the Old Man Creek Bridge. Old Man Creek Bridge gives great access to the deep water around Beavers Weir, which is a little further up stream; this is a good spot to check out because the deeper water holds larger numbers of fish in greater sizes.
The creek runs through the Currawarna, Galore and Narrandera regions and contains bridges at Old Man Creek Bridge and Leitch Reserve which gives access to the northern bank of the creek and access to the Murrumbidgee River also. Old Man Creek contains healthy numbers of Murray Cod and Yellow belly, and also Redfin and Carp.
