The fish in the region are: Murray Cod- these fish are the Mecca of freshwater fish. They are occasionally caught at 120-130cm, 35-45kgs.The largest officially recorded Murray Cod measured up at 183cm (6ft), 113kgs (250lbs) when the fish are this big they are super rare and are a once in a life time fish. They are more commonly caught around 40-55cm.......If you want to read more go to Extras and click on the link Murray Cod. Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua) - are the second most targeted freshwater fish in the Murrumbidgee after the Murray Cod. They are also known as Yellow Belly or Callop. The Golden Perch have been recorded to reach up to 75cm, 20kg which is extremely rare. Most big Golden Perch caught are around 55cm, 4kg which is still an excellent capture. The average fish is around 30cm, 1-2kg. The Golden Perch like to hang around big trees and willows. The Golden perch school up under these structures. They are a good by catch when fishing for Murray Cod and can fill in the time. Trout Cod- are a totally protected species. They have become protected because of the huge amount of over fishing that happened many years ago when man first settled on the rivers. The Trout Cod have the same diet as the Murray Cod. The Trout Cod is one aggressive fish, they will hit a lure or bait without any hesitation and when you hook up on one you will know about it. If you hook up to an aggressive 60-70cm Trout Cod you will think that there is a metre Murray Cod on the end of your line weighing about 30lbs. That is how much the Trout Cod fight; they are full of pure aggression. Silver Perch- are not as common as the first three fish mentioned. The silver perch is a relative of the Golden perch. Although a close relative the silver perch has many differences. There are less of them throughout the river systems; they have much smaller mouths so they are much harder to hook. They eat small baits and are known to eat weed. The Silver perch aren't often caught on lures and more commonly caught using worms. European Carp- is an introduced species and is a huge pest in our waterways. The European Carp are a major pest because they ruin the habitat for our native freshwater fish to live in. The Carp spend their time sucking on the bottom of the river bed trying to pick up any sort of food. The Carp are a very dirty fish because of the dirt that they suck in trying to find food. If caught they must not be returned to the water. English Perch (Redfin)-is another introduced species. The redfin haven't impacted on our native fish as much as the Carp have. They live in big schools in the dams. The redfin that live in the Murrumbidgee River have got a fair size to them. I have caught a 40cm redfin out of the river; which is a good size redfin. Once they reach that size and over they are rare.
